David Picco

SOUNDS LIKE:Subdued folk and country from ex-Newfoundlander and member of Jetset Motel.

Might as well get this out of the way. The latest release from Newfoundland-via-Toronto's David Picco will definitely evoke the double "S" word; singer/songwriter. But don't let that put you off of tracking down this gem of an album. While Picco may explore the age-old themes of love, loss and grief, the 10 tracks feel incredibly heartfelt, even more so considering his recent move to Toronto from Newfoundland.

The minimal instrumentation creates a sense of intimacy. Songs like "You Got My Word" recall Wilco's early music while the album's lead-off "Not For Long" sounds like it could have been recorded in someone's living room. But it's Picco's subdued voice that provides the album's centerpiece. He may not belt it but this only makes the music sound more intimate. He draws the listener right into songs like "September". He brings a sense of genuine sense of loss to the beautiful "Your Guess Is As Good As Mine"

The album may unfold slowly but that's its strength - It invites the listener to sit down and actually pay attention
