Kid Sister - Ultraviolet

SOUNDS LIKE: Fun!

Although Kid Sister made it to the surface of the indefinable depths of the undiscovered musician, she didn't really take full advantage of this... initially. From Chicago house parties to internet stardom off the back of the singles, she plagued us with being Kanye West's notable buddy and then failed to deliver. For what felt like an eternity; not so much as a peep from Kid Sister was heard. A huge amount of speculation on the status of the album was created; name changes, reworks, remixes, new production, etc. Result: A huge hub of interest for the release of Ultraviolet, and predictably a lot of expectation to live up to.

Originating from the Chicago party scene, the music displays Kid Sister's heritage; house and electronica feature heavily and even the production reflects this dance feel, like A-Trak, Spank Rock's XXXchange, and DJ Gant-Man, among others. Her vocals, I know, don't tackle the major issues, aren't political or particularly clever, and yeah, they are pretty much entirely about partying, but they are fun and relatable, and catchy as hell. She tends to play the girl next door card in interviews and it's reflected in her lyrics and, hell, I feel a lot more at one with a girl who ditches the diet for donuts ("Let Me Bang 2009") or indeed one who gets her nails done and has Kanye West on an internationally noted single, pfft! There are highs and lows to the album and although some tracks are fillers, I am super psyched about the day I find myself in a club playing this.

Her seeming inability to switch genres and change the tone doesn't even detract from my enjoyment of this record because it is so relentlessly fun and top of my ‘party play list'.
